And yet, it fails to take enough leaps forward in its software. Last year's S2 was innovative, but it needed polishing. It looks good. Sarah Tew/CNETWhat's interestingSamsung Pay Adding Samsung Pay to the Gear S3 doesn't just enable tap-to-pay at the same places that usually accept Apple Pay or Android Pay. It has MST, a magnetic technology that's also on Samsung's Galaxy phones since the Note 5 and S6, and it works at any credit card terminal. It's essentially a use-anywhere virtual credit card, accessible with a double-click of a button. It works by sending a timed ping that works at vending machines, terminals or anywhere close to the credit card reader. The Gear S2 added Samsung Pay, but only the NFC kind.Spotify Samsung finally made good on offering a Spotify app on the Gear S3 and S2, and it works. There are caveats It can stream over Wi-Fi or LTE if you bought a Gear S3 that has LTE, like my review model, but it can't download tracks. And its interface is bad. And, streaming for an hour and a half nearly depleted my entire watch battery. But... it works! It also requires a paid Spotify subscription. I connected AirPods and listened on the go, and it was pretty fun. But I'd rather download tracks and save data. Spotify works for stand-alone streaming, but it'll chew up battery. Sarah Tew/CNETThe design The Gear S3 comes in two designs, both far more "regular watch" than the futuristic but excellent-looking Gear S2. It's a step forward and a step back. The big and I mean big design feels like a massive sports watch on my thick, hairy wrist. But that design isn't for a lot of people, and loses universal appeal as a result. But at least it feels really well built and looks high-end. The LTE-equipped model is like a tank. But damn, if you like large watches, this is an eye-catching a full stand-alone phone with LTE If you buy the LTE model, it can take calls and even connect apps on the go via AT&T or T-Mobile in the US. If you want a phone on your wrist, here it is. And it's probably the best phone-on-wrist watch that exists. With AT&T, for instance, the watch can share a number with your Android/Samsung phone. Add Bluetooth headphones, and discreet calls can be taken. Would I need that? No. Some might, though. But to use this as an LTE phone, you'll need to pay a monthly fee to add it to your phone plan. Samsung's S Health fitness features are surprisingly good S Health is the required baked-in way to track fitness on the Gear S, but it does heart rate and automatic activity tracking, can log water and coffee intake, and reminds me when I've stayed still too long. It even recommends stretching exercises when I stand again. I like that the S Health encourages activity streaks - walk for a while, and it shows me how long I've been walking for - and sometimes it borders on fitness iOS you can connect and even install apps Samsung's iOS app is not good, but it's more versatile than a basic Android Wear conduit. Samsung S Health connects for fitness tracking, and a handful of apps and watch faces can be downloaded. Just not all of them - Spotify and Uber don't make the cut, for S-Voice works... pretty well Google's upcoming Assistant improvements to Android Wear, and Siri on Apple Watch, offer more connections to phone functions. S-Voice still works OK, though, and can do more than you'd expect setting alarms, calling a contact, getting weather, asking what an aardvark is. It can retrieve brief entries from sources such as Wikipedia. It connects with iOS to some degree. Sarah Tew/CNETWhat's not so hotTizen and its app deficit Samsung's watch makes yet another bet on Tizen, its own software and app ecosystem. And no one else has. The amount of apps for Gear watches has trickled to a near standstill. And while there are some clever games and watch faces, and a few brand-name apps like a CNN or Bloomberg or ESPN watch face, or Uber or Spotify, these apps are so few and far between that you'll hunger for any new one just to justify your Gear purchase. There are technically thousands of Gear S3-compatible apps... but few of them are anything recognizable, or anything most people would want to interface Last year, the Gear S2's novel spinning wheel design for navigation was eye-popping and fun. But it's also time-consuming, and I can't get to what I need as fast as I can on an Apple Watch. Too much dial-spinning, and two buttons to push instead of one, add up to a lot of wasted time fiddling around. At-a-glance info isn't always easy because most Samsung Gear watch faces are light on customization. I can't pack on shortcuts or quick readout info like on the Apple Watch - say, to music or weather or calendar. A more efficient design is needed. It's definitely better than Android Wear right now, but it's not another leap forward. And getting some apps to work requires a mix of Samsung apps, conduit apps and maybe even double log-ins. Spotify required another log-in once my phone was out of reach.LTE model can drain the battery fast I did get two days of battery life on average using the S3 Frontier LTE model when paired to the phone, but if I used LTE to connect to the watch away from the phone, battery life slipped away fast. Depending on what I did, my watch could drain before I got home for dinner and my watch charger. A day on LTE standby was typical - but not guaranteed. What's the use of a smartwatch that has such a wide range of battery endurance depending on performance?It's water resistant, but not swim proof IP68 means dust and dunk-friendly, but unlike the Apple Watch Series 2, you're not meant to go swimming. If only there were more good apps. Sarah Tew/CNETWould I buy one? Would I recommend the Samsung Gear S3 to an iPhone owner? Absolutely not. But with Android phone owners, the decision is harder. There is no perfect watch right now, just a field of inferior products. Android Wear isn't a good answer now, although Android Wear could provide some promise starting in the next few months. Pebble has been absorbed by Fitbit. Samsung offers some interesting options with the Gear S3, and its ability to be a full phone if you spring for the LTE model could appeal to some more than a year since the Gear S2, the S3 amounts to a lateral move. Improved hardware, but not improved software. And no matter how clever the S3's design is, it needs to be better at delivering information fast. That being said, right now, I'd prefer the S3 over any current Android Wear watch... or any other Android-connected watch. That statement will probably change sooner rather than later. But the older Gear S2 is still available, and at around $230 it's far more of an impulse purchase. It lacks a speakerphone, though. And if you care about adding phone service, the Gear S3 LTE is far better than the S2 watch is absolutely attractive. Its looks catch the eye of people I show it to, and while it's big, it's definitely good-looking. But it's not the best info-on-my-wrist remote way to quickly check in on my life. Maybe that's a problem with all smartwatches. But it's definitely a problem with this one. The Samsung Gear S3 $ is the most aggressively featured smartwatch you can buy for Android phones. It makes calls, plays music, runs apps, tracks steps, shows widgets, sends texts, and lets you pay with your credit card. It's also waterproof and has a far better interface than Android Wear smartwatches. But it's big, clunky, and expensive, and Samsung itself offers a better solution in the Gear S2 Classic $ at AmazonOpens in a new window . There's the Classic, with a smooth bezel in silver or rose, and the Frontier, with a more rugged look. There's also an LTE-compatible version of the Frontier sold by AT&T and T-Mobile, which are the only models that can support voice calls. Each one costs $349; AT&T charges $10 per month for smartwatch service, and T-Mobile charges $5. We tested both carrier versions of the LTE Frontier, which connect to LTE on Bands 2 and 5, which are shorter-range than T-Mobile's Band 12 and AT&T's Band 17. You Can Trust Our Reviews The S3 Frontier weighs ounces and measures by by inches HWD. Its body is broadly similar to the S2 Classic's, just larger, thicker, and heavier. It has a rotating bezel which is still the best way any smartwatch has to select from a menu of options, two buttons, and a 360-by-260, 278ppi circular AMOLED touch screen. There's an always-on option buried within settings, which required a reboot to take effect. It gives you a slightly dimmer, still colorful display, but it sucks down battery. You can't see the microphone and speakers, but they're there, and they're surprisingly powerful. There's a heart-rate monitor on the underside, and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE, and GPS within. Similar Products The Gear series works with Android phones. While many features work independently, especially on the LTE-capable models, you need the Samsung Gear helper app to install new apps and watch faces, and that isn't available for iOS. This is a taste thing, I admit, but I'm just going to say I dislike the Gear S3's design. I don't like how gigantic, heavy, and bulky it is. I don't like the sticky "athletic" silicone band, which is fortunately replaceable with any 22mm band. Ultimately, I just feel that a smartwatch shouldn't dominate your wrist like the Death Star. I know there are some people who like very large watches, but I'm not one of them. The Gear S2 Classic is far more manageable. Samsung says you can "go for days on a single charge," but that depends on how heavily you use the watch. I got about a day and a half of battery life with heavy use, or three days if I left it alone, all with the "always-on" screen option turned off. Still, that's better than the Apple Watch, which lasts about a day. You charge it using the included cradle, pictured below. The Gear S3s we tested have SIM cards and connect to LTE networks. For an LTE watch to work properly in your lifestyle, you need to be using AT&T's NumberSync function or T-Mobile's Digits to sync with your main number. I tried both, they work. You don't want your smartwatch to have its own phone number, after all. The watch doesn't have a headphone jack, although it connects to wireless headphones. Still, you'll likely make most of your calls using the built-in speaker. I found it much more convenient for short calls than having to fumble for my phone or connect a headset. Call quality is surprisingly clear using HD voice on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks. Texting is less differentiated from the Gear S2 and other smartwatches, although it works when you're not near your phone, which is a big difference from non-LTE units. Fortunately, you can still reply using preloaded quick responses, which you can edit in the Gear app. You can also reply by recording short voice messages and sending them. Operating System and Apps The S3 runs Samsung's Tizen operating system, which has always had a clearer UI than Android Wear. It defaults to a watch face, of course. Turn the bezel left for notifications. Turn it right for customizable widgets. Those can include a calendar, contacts, music player, or various lenses on your health information. Press the bottom button for a radial menu of all the apps on the watch; hold the top button for Samsung Pay. That's similar in a lot of ways to the Apple Watch's usability, although I wish I could set the bezel to rotate to my most-used apps, as opposed to the subset of apps that have available widgets. The S3 has 4GB of storage, of which about 3GB is free for add-on apps, music, and images. The Gear's app store has developed slowly with time. Most of the good apps aren't free; they cost $1-5. The most surprising plus is the long list of games, with lots of rip-offs of popular brands like Fruit Ninja, Crossy Road, and Galaxian, all playable on the watch. Official apps for popular social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat are missing, as are good information and news apps beyond CNN, ESPN, and Flipboard, although there are low-quality clone apps available for social network management. If you get tired of the physical UI, you can use S Voice to command the watch. It's supposed to launch when you say "OK Gear," but I found that it often triggers unexpectedly and then starts writing down entire random conversations you have, which is very disconcerting. Otherwise, it lets you set timers and alarms, take notes, and make calls and texts in a fully hands-free mode. Fitness Features With its rugged, IP68 waterproof body, the Gear S3 is selling itself as a fitness tracker, too. Samsung says it's dunkable, but not to take it swimming. It's accurate enough for both step counts and elevation. Compared with a Fitbit Charge 2 $ at FitbitOpens in a new window , I saw 887 steps on the Gear S3 where the Fitbit counted 884. The watch translates changes in elevation into stairs climbed, but unfortunately, it can't tell when you're on an escalator. That's an easy way to make your daily stair quota, though! You interact with your fitness data through Samsung's S Health app, which is preloaded on Samsung phones and downloadable for other Android devices. It tracks a bunch of metrics, including steps, sleep, heart rate, water consumption, where and how much you've run or walked, weight goals, and more. You can add additional plug-ins to sync with Noom, Pear, Withings, or Cigna. S Health, unfortunately, doesn't sync with other popular third-party fitness apps like MyFitnessPal, MapMyRun, Strava, or Runtastic. This could be a big minus if you're already part of one of those huge fitness communities. Samsung Pay Samsung Pay is one of the Gear S3's flagship features, and one of its big differences from the Gear S2. It just has one really pesky usability problem. Samsung Pay works in tandem with the Gear app; you set up your credit card in the app, and then you can pay by pressing your watch against a store's credit card reader. Because the watch uses both NFC and magnetic stripe technology, it works with traditional credit card readers. It should be effortless. But if you want to use the Gear S3 with Samsung Pay, you have to lock your watch with a PIN. You now have to type the picky little PIN out when you want to use your first smart function or Samsung Pay each day, or every time you put the watch on. As I kept taking the watch off and putting it on each day, or trying to use Samsung Pay for coffee first thing in the morning, I was encountering the PIN over and over again. I eventually gave up using Samsung Pay for my coffee because the last thing you want to do when you're groggy is try to use the number pad on a watch. Conclusions If we were just tallying features, the Samsung Gear S3 would get a higher rating than you see at the top of the page. But our view on smartwatches is that smaller, simpler, and clearer is better. Pebble's watches fit that bill, but Pebble is now gone. The Gear S3 is huge, expensive, and complex—it's the Microsoft Office of smartwatches. The difference between the Gear S3 and the LTE-enabled version of the Gear S2 Classic is largely cosmetic. Mostly, by choosing the Gear S2, you lose the altimeter, the barometer, and the ability to use Samsung Pay with non-NFC based credit card machines. In exchange, you save $100 and don't have to wear a giant honking watch on your wrist. In its non-LTE form, you lose calling and GPS as well, but being able to yell into your wrist like Dick Tracy is likely more of a gimmick than an actual frequently used feature. Apple users, meanwhile, should go with the Apple Watch Series 1 at AmazonOpens in a new window or Series 2 $ at AmazonOpens in a new window .
